About the Episode
The fearless forecast is that podcasting is the future. Podcasting is the next big thing and that’s why a lot of people are interested in becoming a podcaster but the biggest question is…IS PODCASTING FOR YOU?
Misconception 01: Podcasting is Easy
You have listened to a lot of podcasts, even your neighbour has a podcast show! So you feel that you can be like Joe Rogan, but you don’t to work like Joe Rogan. If you think that a podcaster just hits the record button, read from a script and publish. THINK AGAIN.
Reality Check: Podcasting is like entering a relationship. It needs time, money, commitment & dedication.– Usapang Podcast
According to the 2021 Podcast Index Data, there are currently over two million podcasts and more than 48 million podcast episodes pero on Anchor alone, 43% of their shows only have ONE Episode! So imagine if you just publish weekly, you’ll already be ahead of the game.
Misconception number 02: Podcasting can get you RICH QUICK!
Yes, there’s money in podcasting but if you want to replace your regular income with your podcast earnings – it’s not a realistic expectation. Now, If you think you just need to start and money will come pouring in, well, you’re in for a big surprise.
Of course, with a strategic plan and great content – it’s possible. Make it as a side hustle before it can become a main pipeline of income. It’s also the quickest way to ruin a hobby is to monetize it right away. Add value first.
Misconception number 03: You Don’t Need to Spend a cent in Podcasting
At the end of the day, it’s an audio-first medium. The quality of audio matters. There’s very little time to make an impression, especially if they can’t see you. Now, we’re talking about someone who wants to seriously have fruits in podcasting. There’s a learning curve in everything so be wise.
Misconception Number 04. I Don’t Need To Listen To My Podcast
As they say in sales training, you have to be sold on the product you’re selling. As with everything, there’s passion involved in podcasting. You have to be updated with what’s new in your industry.
Misconception Number 05. I Don’t Need To Be Original
Jonathan Lethem, an American novelist, once said that when people call something “original,” nine out of ten times they just don’t know the references or the original sources involved. Following that idea seems to justify the statement that copying is okay. But really…it’s not.
When we talk about Originality, we mean authenticity. Being authentic to the message that you want to say in your show and to your audience.
As creators, we all have our inspirations on who we want to be or how our show should look like or sound like. Sure, we learn from copying…but copying is different from plagiarism because plagiarism is trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own. Also, when you get so used to copying other shows, you might be robbing yourself from the chance to create a solid audience/fans. And you can be susceptible to podfading.
