Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Ami, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.
Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs.
Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky.
“I’m not a bridezilla. I’m a perfectionist”
(basically what a bridezilla would say🤷🏻♀️)
Amelia and Olivia Torres are twins but just like the cliché book description, yeah, yeah! they are totally different.
There are people who are born lucky and we kinda hate them haha! I mean, those people who always win in raffles, lotteries & basically everything in life. #WINNING – That’s Ami (Amelia) while Olivia (Ollie) is the exact opposite. It’s as if nung nagpasabog ng kamalasan si Lord, it was Olive’s turn to come out of the womb & she had them all. From being stuck in a claw crane arcade machine to being bitten by a rattlesnake while hiking – these are just some of the unfortunate events in her life and with these happenings, she’s reminded that, somehow, the universe screwed her at least in this lifetime.
she’s reminded that, somehow, the universe screwed her at least in this lifetime.
After the wedding reception disaster, Olive agreed to use the 10-day honeymoon package trip to Maui that Ami & Dane won because Ami is THAT lucky! Who would want to waste such a chance, right? But she had to go with Ethan (the person she hates the most) and pretend to be the Mr. & Mrs Thomas. They were playing a dangerous but exciting game. It’s FRAUD, to begin with! OMG! and yet, with the turn of events, it became a delicious dance between Olive & Ethan.
Lie After Lie After Lie…
The original plan was just to present themselves as the newly-wed Mr & Mrs Thomas and then privately mind their own businesses for the next 10 days. Good thinking! until Olive met Mr. Hamilton (her new boss) so they had to pretend for one more night as a happily married couple. AND THEN! Ethan’s ex happened. Sometimes, exes can really be a pain in the arse!
Olive feels bad for Ethan that she somewhat tried to make the best of out of the lies because he looked miserable – Seeing Sophie 6 months after the breakup with her now fiancee, in Hawaii (of all places) and him? He’s faking everything.
Olive x Ethan
They may have started in a bad position where they can’t stand each other’s breathing sounds, but if you look at it closely, they’ve been pretty much honest & confrontational to each other (well, EXCEPT for Ethan’s real feelings) and I love the dynamics of their relationship. Sure, they argue a lot but they talk. They are open about the things they have in mind or as Ethan puts it “Think out loud with me.” And another thing, I’m happy that on this plot, the guy wants to DTR! As in Determine The Relationship! Hello?! A guy asking for a DTR! Holy sh*t!
The past 2 Christina Lauren books that I’ve read are both record-breaking – meaning, I’ve read them within 24-48 hours of purchase & the same goes for Helen Hoang and Ali Berg/Michelle Kalus because their books are THAT GOOD! But for The Unhoneymooners, my total reading time was more or less 9 hours & that’s a brand new another personal record and this, my friend, is a 432-page, large paperback book!! Obviously, I love it and as they say, it’s unputdownable!
But I’ll be honest here too because, towards the middle, I was a little concerned and asking myself, what if Olive & Ethan become a thing?! What now?? Of course, I’m rooting for them! But they are like in-laws now, like WTF!? It reminded me of the Maggie-Jackson Avery situation (Grey’s Anatomy) and thankfully things happened and you know…
And I don’t know if it’s the lack of sleep but at 3:30 am, I was damn, emotional & hurt with what Ami said to Olive! Then Ethan!
I’m like, I FEEL YOU, SIS! The words that Ethan mouthed to Olive were hurtful! Oh! just read it already!
Christina Lauren are, without a doubt, 2 of my favourite authors! It’s like they are my soulmates because they get me as a reader. What I look for and what I want in a story/book.
✔︎ Romance & tickled-pink feeling
✔︎ Strong but imperfect characters
✔︎ A realistic way of thinking & situations
And as much as I love Contemporary Romance, I also prefer the realistic components of the story such as dialogues, choice of words and as always, CL didn’t disappoint. And once again, they introduced new characters that we can’t help but love.
Large, Loud & Loving Familia
I also appreciate the Latino family present in this book because as a Filipino, I can relate because of the similarities in our culture when it comes to families – Large, Loud & Loving. A family member’s problem is everybody’s problem and we do our best to help each other.
- Olive’s Wedding Speech
- Hola! Side Bitches!
- Ladies, learn from Ami on how she handled the situation
- Flowers for Mami! – this is a savage & pure gem!
Towards the end of the book, CL gave us a sneak peek of their newest book coming this October 2019, entitle Twice in a Blue Moon.
