My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren book review 2

Genre: Fiction / Chick Lit / Contemporary Romance | Publication Date: 4 Dec 2018 | Date Finished: 30 Dec 2018

Millie Morris has always been one of the guys. A UC Santa Barbara professor, she’s a female-serial-killer expert who’s quick with a deflection joke and terrible at getting personal. And she, just like her four best guy friends and fellow professors, is perma-single.

So when a routine university function turns into a black tie gala, Mille and her circle make a pact that they’ll join an online dating service to find plus-ones for the event. There’s only one hitch: after making the pact, Millie and one of the guys, Reid Campbell, secretly spent the sexiest half-night of their lives together, but mutually decide the friendship would be better off strictly platonic.

But online dating isn’t for the faint of heart. While the guys are inundated with quality matches and potential dates, Millie’s first profile attempt garners nothing but dick pics and creepers. Enter Catherine—Millie’s fictional profile persona, in whose make-believe shoes she can be more vulnerable than she’s ever been in person. Soon Catherine and Reid strike up a digital pen-pal-ship. . . but Millie can’t resist temptation in real life, either. Soon, Millie will have to face her worst fear—intimacy—or risk losing her best friend, forever.

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren book review 3

And the authors did it again! I had fun reading the story and I loved all the characters & their quirks, and it’s a CL (Christina Lauren) thing. They know how to develop & present their characters & there’s no way that you’re not gonna love them. Seryoso! And Reid’s mom! OMG…she’s a certified guilt-tripper! But you know, mothers can be manipulative & fun at the same time. hehe!

This book will leave you smiling, I swear. 😀

It’s a story about love & friendship between a girl (Millie Morris) & the guys, namely Reid, Alex, Ed and Chris. For me, it’s like Big Bang Theory gang but hotter versions of the guys.

She's a cool friend but complicated as a girlfriend.

Millie is the only girl in the group because for her, having/maintaining a female relationship is very complicated. The thing is, she’s a cool friend because she’s one of the boys. You can be gross in front of her and she’s like, okay! whatever! But then, she’s complicated as a girlfriend because she never opens up the private deets of her life. She’s an introvert and at the same time, but in her defence, she doesn’t want to be the group’s, Debbie Downer.

Millie came from a breakup when she met Reid & the guys and from then on, they became good friends & pretty much inseparable.

When the black-tie gala came up, the group decided to try an online dating app similar to Tinder. They created their accounts, got invites, likes and respective matches but because Millie is a bit cray-cray, she secretly created a second account where she revealed her true self but she was caught by surprise when Reid & her new profile matched. What happens next, you have to read it. 😛

My Favorite Half-Night Stand by Christina Lauren quote on loneliness

1. The way they presented Reid’s persona, mamahalin mo rin siya eh. He’s like a living/breathing version of your dream guy:

  • Intelligent
  • good looking, great body
  • sensitive, attentive & thoughtful

2. Christina Lauren knows how to deliver that romantic excitement/pakilig that we want to have while reading a love story. And they do it thru simple gestures of the characters, so you’ll be like AWWWW… I know this ‘coz I did too!

3. I love the dynamics of the characters and how they handled the situation. The boys see Millie as their sister and in the end, they all looked after her & protected her in a way. Sila yung masasabi mong real friends because they helped instead of abandoning her.

3. “orgasm cupcake” moment

4. the funny & epic text/chat exchange between the group.

Dating App Experience

Maybe that’s how it is in the US? But not the same in my experience. It’s very rare that you open up very personal stuff immediately. It’s usually call/exchange texts & then maybe meet.

Acknowledgement at the end of the book

Personally, I see this as one of the best parts of the book — when CL thanked every blogger, bookstagrammer, booktuber & all reviewers in the community. I was touched. I know it’s nothing huge but to know that the authors see all the efforts of the people who support and love their work, it’s a wonderful thing. Thank you!!

This is another hit story by Christina Lauren but Josh & Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating is still on top of my list. I am giving this 4 stars.
