One Day in December by Josie Silver_Book Review_Berryduchess

Genre: Fiction/Romance Novel
Publication Date: Oct 2018
Date Finished: 25 Nov 2018

Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn’t exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there’s a moment of pure magic…and then her bus drives away.

Certain they’re fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn’t find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they “reunite” at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It’s Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.

Laurie James is a hotel receptionist by day and a journalist at heart. One winter night in 2008, while on a bus, she saw the love of her life. Yep, love at first sight. Unfortunately, the man of his dreams didn’t get the chance to ride the same bus because he also hesitated at first. The transport went off and so was her hope to know him. After that, Laurie, with the help of her best friend Sarah, they searched for him and when she’s about to give up, he finally came and introduced himself…The unfortunate thing is… the Bus Boy (real name Jack O’Mara) is her BFF’s new boyfriend. It’s TOO COMPLICATED!! I know, right???!

When they were introduced, they both denied that they’ve seen each other before. But deep inside they were like “OMG!! He’s the bus boy!/She’s the girl on the bus!” Of course, they know! That night was too unforgettable for them & they hoped one day they’ll have a chance, maybe? So Laurie & Jack suppressed the facts & feelings because:

For one, Laurie loves Sarah like a sister and she doesn’t have the heart to say that Jack is actually the man of his dreams and two, Jack likes Sarah so much and their relationship was actually doing great. Both can’ t afford to hurt Sarah so they, sort of, sacrificed. But one evening of too much booze & pressures from their suppressed emotions, Lauren & Jack kissed to which they both regret because they felt that they cheated on Sarah. They kept mum about it and at some point, avoided each other.

One Day in December by Josie Silver_Quote on being happy

As years passed by and the three of them became best of friends but Laurie took her time to travel and be away as far as possible from Jack. The next years were a rollercoaster of emotions and events for the characters. Laurie went to Thailand and met a good man, Oscar who’s a banker in London by profession. They went back to the city, started a new life and moved in together. After some time, they got engaged and married while Jack and Sarah split up. Jack moved to Scotland for a promising job, found new relationships and Sarah met a new man and moved to Australia.

It’s sad to say but Laurie did settle for the second best which is Oscar. It’s her safest choice but she’s not really happy so when their marriage was on the rocks, it’s easy for her to just leave. And she did. After less than a year of being Mrs. Olgilvy-Black, they moved on separate ways because she can’t give up her life in London and be with Oscar in Brussels. But we all know it’s more than that, of course…

I expected this book to give me that Christmas feels but it failed to give me the vibes. The story flow is a predictable and the usual elements of a love story were presented. Like that moment when Jack was in a pretty bad shape and Laurie was just trying to be a friend but all he did was be an arse and tried kissing her again which left her scared & running. You see where I’m coming from? Predictable. This story was somewhat similar to Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert (book & movie) where the lead did some soul-searching in Thailand, met a wonderful man and married them after.

If Jo Watson’s Love to Hate You’kilig is so intense, this novel is the opposite. It’s a slow, build-up of emotions and a combination of sadness, sayang naman feelings & the medyo intense probability that they might confront each other & speak their minds about the first night that they laid eyes to each other.

There were times when I felt frustrated because Laurie can be such a Debbie Downer especially to herself. She sees herself as the plain Jane friend of Sarah and yes, they’re the total opposite because Sarah is a go-getter. She knows what she wants and grabs everything whenever she gets the chance.

Overall, the book’s fine and well-written but it’s not my favourite. There were funny parts but I can’t categorise this as a romantic comedy novel. If you’re a hopeless romantic, this one’s for you. 🙂
