Kat Von D Lock It Tattoo Foundation Review

It’s been more than a month since I’ve used and tested this foundation and the time has come to share my thoughts on the Kat Von D Lock it Tattoo Foundation.

Kat Von D never fails to impress me when it comes to the packaging of her products. You can tell that they are well-thought of; elaborated that it really stands out when you put it together with other foundations.

The foundation comes in a pump bottle and that rubber stamp-like with her logo serves as the cover of the pump.

Product’s Promises:

  • A high-pigment foundation for full coverage that leaves a long-lasting, beautiful finish.
  •  provide exceptional coverage without compromising a smooth, striking finish.

For a month, I tried to play with this foundation and it is the most challenging foundation that I’ve tried to date.

With the help of the Sephora SA, I picked up the shade Light 45 for my skin tone. I tried it several times and applied it in different ways:

  • without primer
  • with primer
  • with facial oil
  • with moisturiser

And out of the 4 trials, I find that mixing it with facial oil seems to be the best option for me. 1. Without a primer, I noticed that it got a bit patchy on the crevices of my nose and it emphasised my pores. After seeing that, my initial reaction was”Oh no…..”

2. Primer + KVD Lock-It Foundation

The photos below were taken when I used the foundation with the MUFE Step 1 primer and it looked better than the first trial.

On a closer look, this is how my skin looked like after almost an hour of wearing it.  HOWEVER, when I wore it all throughout the day sans air-conditioning, the foundation melted beautifully on the skin. It took some time to fully unlock the potential of the foundation but when it happened, it was flawless.

3. Facial Oil + KVD Lock-It Foundation

I mixed the foundation with CoverFx Custom Infusion Drops that I was also testing that time and it looked better than the first 2 applications. Though it photographs beautifully, I felt that it was not very flattering as it made me a look older as opposed to the claim that your face will look hydrated.

4. Moisturiser + KVD Lock-It Foundation

Uhm, no. I didn’t like it and I will never do it again.

  • Long wearing – I can’t attest on the 24-hour wear since I haven’t tried that yet and I have no plans of keeping my makeup for that long, but…
    • I assure you that it’s long wearing because I tested this when I prepared dinner and I spent more than an hour in the kitchen with full makeup on and my face did not move.
    •  Also, I wore it when I went to the salon for some haircut and my stylist washed my hair several times, but the foundation remained untouched.
  • Buildable medium to full coverage and it’s very pigmented.
    • You only need a small amount.
    • you may skip using a concealer because of the coverage.
  • Sweat-proof.
  • Scent-free.

  • Not easy to apply.
  • If not applied correctly, it can emphasise your pores and exaggerate the dry areas of your face.
    • If you have dry skin, skip this one.
  • It can also be too thick/heavy if not handled properly.
  • Dries too quickly so you need to work fast and blend it.

As much as I would love to give this a higher rating, I can’t. Sure, it’s long wearing,  sweat-proof and may even be waterproof but it takes a lot of effort to make it work. You have to find your way/method that can work for you and in my case, it was by applying facial oil.

As much as I would love to give this a higher rating, I can’t.

I don’t recommend the use of a brush when applying this because the formula is already a bit viscous to start with. Use a wet sponge or Beautyblender to at least sheer out the product but you have to work fast or it will be dry and harder to work on. Try adding a facial oil to at least break the formula and be sure to use a primer before you apply it on your face.

If I were to rate this, I say it’s a B- because, despite the beautiful finish, the drawback was the ease of application. It’s just too much effort for a foundation.

  • Sold at 56 SGD at Sephora local and online stores
  • 35 USD at Sephora US

***It is highly recommended that you visit a Sephora store so you can check and try the shades before buying.

I wanted this to work but it did not. This review is based on my personal experience with the product and it may or may not work for others. As always, you can count on my honest  and unbiased reviews because that’s what I always do in this blog. 🙂

Thank you so much and until next time!
