Kylie Jenner Lip Kits in Ginger and Kristen – Photos, Reviews and Swatches

Kylie released Maliboo, Ginger and Kristen for her 2016 summer collection and today I will share my thoughts on the two shades.

Kylie Jenner Summer Lip Kits_Ginger and Kristen Review

*Complete details of the packaging are in my previous posts and you can check it here.

*please note that due to the difference in undertones, the shades may look brighter or darker to different people.

For your reference here are my shades:
NC25 (MAC Pro Longwear Foundation) / 1.5 (MAC Matchmaster) Y225 (MUFE Ultra HD) / Light 4 Deauville (NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation)

Kylie Jenner Lip Kit_Ginger review and swatches

Described as a terracotta brown or brown-orange with a flat matte finish, this shade is towards the warmer side. Ginger reminds me so much of Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Ashton and though there is a slight difference but once they dry up, it is negligible enough to notice in person.

As you will notice, the photo above shows how the lippies look like just after the application and the colour difference is pretty obvious. However, once they dry down, Ginger and Ashton looked very similar.

Kylie Jenner Lip Kit_KRISTEN review

This shade, which was a tribute to her momager Kris Jenner, is described as a warm brown berry with a flat matte finish. Again, it has a 90% resemblance with ABH Kathryn but Kathryn has a more pink berry undertone than Kristen.

Also, you can notice that when they completely dry, Kathryn becomes darker than Kristen.

  • Each Kylie Jenner Lip Kit is sold at 29 USD (shipping fee not included)
  • Though you can now buy the singles for the regular shades, (17 USD for liquid lipsticks / 14 USD for lip liners) it seems that this limited summer collection is only available in kits. You can check the details here.
    • In Singapore, the price of online sellers may vary, but the average price is between 55 – 90 SGD/lip kit.
  • I purchased these from Shopaholic Mom (Carousell) and you can click the icon below to visit her store.

Kylie Jenner Lip Kits compared with Anastasia Beverly Hills

✔ The products are both very opaque and pigmented (individually used or combination)1 swipe is enough

✔ Easy to use and apply.

✔ It feels light on the lips as if you are not wearing lipstick at all.

✔ Not sticky.

✔ No feathering.

✔ Long lasting/long wearing.

This is the photo that I took after I had dinner and though there was no bleeding, I noticed the product faded a little from the inner part of the lips.

  • If this happens, you can either reapply or dab it with the lip liner.

Kylie Jenner Lip kit_test

✔ My lips weren’t flaky despite the 8 hours of wear before I removed my makeup.

✔ Minimal transfer (only if you eat very oily foods)

✔ Easy to remove even though it seems that it can stand oily foods.

✔ Made in the USA.

Let me start with the lip liner – it BREAKS EASILY.😫 I used a MAC makeup pencil sharpener and the moment I swipe it on my lips, it broke. TWICE. So on the third time, I made sure that it wasn’t too pointy or else, I am just like wasting my money every time it breaks.

I did not encounter this with my previous Kylie lip liners but it can also be because of the hot weather and normally I would leave the windows open for fresh air. If this happens, try placing them in a cool, dry place so it won’t be too soft when you use them.

  • I mentioned this in my recent podcast when I talked about the liquid matte lipsticks.a With the first 4 shades that I reviewed, I did not feel any dryness whenever I wear them, HOWEVER, for this set, I felt dryness towards the 5th hour.
  • I think that for darker shades it tends to be more drying. Either that or the formula is not consistent.

  • It has a cake batter smell and taste. But it wears off after a few minutes.

  • The brand is not available in Singapore but you can still get it from online sellers
    • You can check CAROUSELL for local sellers.

  • It is hard to get through the website and the moment they restock, it is as good as sold out.

As for the comparison with ABH’s Ashton and Kathryn, if you already have the ABH, you may skip these shades but of course, it still depends on you if you want these in your collection or not. But generally, they are around 90% similar.

  1. Hi! Thank you for your input! It helped me to choose between CP’s Bumble or Kylie’s Kristen. Eventually, I chose CP’s Bumble because I’m currently tight on a budget and the dryness is not too much different, if I have the extra budget I definitely want to try Kylie’s lip kit and join the craze.
I can’t wait to try my CP’s Bumble when it arrive 😀

  2. hi! I think with the new Cpop ultra mattes, they have thinner formula than before. I really understand the price difference so here’s my personal take on these two when it comes to dryness.

With Coloupop Ultra Matte, I did not feel the dryness while wearing them. BUT! after removing, my lips felt so dry (about 2 days) so I had to lather them with lip moisturiser.

With Kylie’s Kristen I felt the dryness while wearing it towards the 5th hour. With lighter shades, I did not experience this. When I removed it after, my lips were perfectly okay. So there.

So it’s like both have their own pros and cons. But if you have a strict budget, there is nothing wrong with getting Colourpop but if you will have the chance to try a Kylie lip kit (especially before you buy them), give it a go. Nothing beats your personal experience with the products. Like I always say, some will love it, some won’t. It all goes down to personal preference. 😀 I hope this helps.

  3. Hi! I was thinking of buying Colourpop Bumble or Kylie’s Kristen and saw your blog, are there any differences for the drying formula texture and the color between the two?

I would like to buy the Kylie one but its too expensive, so if they’re a lot similar I would rather buy Colourpop’s.

  4. Just ordered my KJ lip kit in Ginger and (impatiently) waiting for it to arrive at my doorstep! 😀 But looking at the swatches, I’m wondering how it is compared to ABH’s Ashton, in terms of formula & etc.? Which one did you like better?

  5. No problem! Bow n arrow is a very popular shade from KVD but I havent tried it yet. Based on photos, I think dolce k is darker than bow n arrow but jeffree star’s Celebrity Skin got similarities. The shade range of Kylie’s lip kits are truly beautiful, only that the formula may be a little inconsistent… 😶 the only metallic lip that I got from her was Lord from her birthday collection and that lippie is intense!

You can check Ofra’s Fifth Ave is like a dupe for King K. Love Ofra’s formula btw. Colourpop got new shades for their metallic lipsticks too. I think since metallic lips is now a thing, most famous brands are coming out with their version as well. MAC, Urban Decay, and a lot more. 🙂

  6. thank so much for the extra pictures!! they helped a lot, yeah i was looking at dolce k – but i heard some not great things about kylies formula compared to kvd and since these are my first liquid lipsticks i think i’d only like one of each to compare 🙂 so think i’m gonna get ginger from kylie and i think bow n arrow from kat von d.
I think dolce k and bow n arrow are meant to be similar arent day? and similar to nyx’s sandstorm too i think?
And i’m also thinking about kylies metallic in king k, do you have any opinion on those? :)) or should I be looking at some better formula metallic that might be more interesting to try? I’m looking for a bronze-gold lip look.

Thanks so much for your help! 🙂

  7. I would say yes because they are different. I added photos comparing the 3 shades (Ashton, Ginger and Lolita II) so you can see the swatch comparison.

So you must be looking for your perfect nude? Maybe you can also check out Dolce K and Jeffre Star’s Celebrity Skin. 🙂

  8. would you say its worth getting lolita 2 and ginger? how similar are they once they dry. because i saw comparisons were lolita 2 and ashton were very similar. I wanna get a kylie lip kit to try the lipliner and stick, but i have somewhat tan olive skin and quite thin lips – so i dont suit pinky shades like candy k- i wish there was a darker version of exposed ( its my skin colour so looks very strange) so i really want to get ginger, but i already ordered lolita 2 and i’m not sure it’s 30 dollars worth of a difference?

Let me know your thoughts :)
